At his 9 month appointment, he weighed 20 lb. 12 oz and was 29 inches long. Both of those were in the 50th-85th percentile. :) He is growing like a weed! He got one shot and had blood work done also.

In this month, he finally mastered crawling instead of just scooting. He still loves eating solids and has been introduced to lots of new foods. He had a great Christmas and got lots of new toys. He also learned how to pull up to a stand. He LOVES doing this in his crib after naps. :) He is growing into such a big boy and we love him to pieces!

~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-24755275334873837292012-01-21T21:16:00.003-05:002012-01-21T21:25:53.749-05:008 monthsOkay, I have been such a slacker at blogging! He didn't like it at first so we waited a couple of weeks and tried again with success. He has been eating it (along with breastmilk) regularly since about 5 months old. We have recently tried other baby foods such as applesauce, bananas, sweet potatoes, and carrots. So far he loves them all! :)

At his well visit on July 18, he weighed in at 13 lb, 15 oz (25%) and was 26 inches long (75%). We are SO proud of his weight gain! :) His doctor was pretty pumped too! He got 3 vaccinations (one was oral) and cried a little bit after the shots, but mommy was there to comfort him. :) He is growing so fast and learns new things everyday. Here are some things that he is doing now:

He is still sleeping about 8 hours each night, which allows mommy and daddy to get some sleep too. However, I'm not looking forward to having to get up earlier pretty soon to go to work!

He is also still eating about every 3 to 3 1/2 hours during the day - totaling 6 times a day. We are going to try to begin introducing rice cereal this weekend...so stay tuned for that. Not gonna pressure him into, but just try to see if he's ready.

He started sleeping full time in his crib at night, shortly after he turned 3 months. :)

He still has his hands (or something) in his mouth ALL the time!

He recently "found" his feet after bath time on night (see picture below). Since then, every chance he gets, he is grabbing at them! So cute! :)

He is starting to giggle and laugh more when we do something silly.

Just this week, he has learned to make a gargling sound....and does it constantly. :)

He can roll over to his side but hasn't made it all the way to his tummy...yet.

We love seeing him learn all of these new things...It's like a new adventure every day! :)

~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-77665873212301174732011-07-04T09:56:00.001-04:002011-07-04T14:23:06.402-04:00Happy 4th of July!

To celebrate the 4th, we went to Summerville's Red, White, and Blue on the Green. Brantley wasn't old enough to play the games but we did decorate his stroller and we walked in the kid's parade! He was asleep in this picture but he ended up waking up for the parade. :) He got lots of "aww's" and "so cute's" because of his sign! He didn't win any of the prizes but he won CUTEST in our book! :)

We hope you have a Happy 4th with your family and friends!

~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-83501354287387391222011-06-19T18:35:00.003-04:002011-06-19T18:44:12.578-04:00Happy 1st Father's Day!
Happy 1st Father's Day to Mike! Brantley is so blessed to have such a great daddy! After church, we took daddy to eat at his restaurant of choice- Gilligan's. We had a yummy lunch and then came home. Mike has been doing what he likes to do best- watching sports all afternoon (baseball, NASCAR, and soccer)! He is still continuing to gain weight and now weighs 11 lb, 12 oz. We will go back to the doctor for his 4 month well-visit next month. Here are somethings that he is doing right now:

His head support is getting much better. He can now hold it up mostly by himself and can sit up with help.

He likes to "stand" in our laps. He has some strong legs! :)

He sleeps about 8 hours each night!! Woo Hoo! :) Normally from about 10pm to 6am.

During the day, he still eats about every 3 hours totaling 6 times a day.

He still takes about 4 naps a day.

He has rolled over from front to back a couple of times while on his play mat.

He is very active...he loves to kick his legs and wave his arms while on his play mat and in his bouncy chair.

He will smile when he is talked to and has started to coo. We try to "talk" back to him to teach him about talking turns in conversation. :)

He loves his hands, which are constantly in his mouth! Anyone know how early babies start to teethe??? We are wondering if this is the start?

He has started to take naps in his crib in hopes of him getting used to it so he can start sleeping in it at night.

He also had some cute pictures done yesterday by Kristen Pace Photography. She posted some sneak peeks of the photo shoot on facebook. Time is already flying by so quickly! We went in for his 2 month appointment last Thursday. He weighed in at 9 lb. 14 oz and was 23 in long!! :) We are both so happy that he is finally starting to pack on the weight! He is still long and skinny like his daddy though. His weight is in between the 10th and 20th percentile and his length is right at the 50th percentile. He also had to get four vaccinations, which he did great at! The nurse seemed to be impressed...way to go B! :) His doctor was happy with his progress and health so we just have to go back at 4 months.

Right now, I have been back at work since April 25 and he has been staying with my friend Lindsay. He's been doing great on a schedule. He eats about every 3 hours during the day and will go for about 4-5 hours during the night between feedings. He takes about 4 naps a day and is becoming more and more alert and playful. He is working so hard on holding up his head. It's so cute when he bobbles around! :) He has started to smile and smirk at Mike and I when we interact with him. I'm just counting down the days till summer so that I can spend all day with him again! :)

He is continuing to grow...I took him for a weight check today at the hospital and he has finally passed the 10 lb mark. He weighed in at 10 lb, 1.5 oz! Keep it up Brantley! :)

~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-10879838277974631172011-05-10T21:01:00.004-04:002011-05-10T21:07:56.495-04:00Happy 1st Mother's Day!

I had a great 1st Mother's Day. Mike, Brantley and I went to church and then to lunch at my favorite restaurant, California Dreaming! So yummy! :) Then we just hung out around the house the rest of the day. Hard to believe he is already 1 month old!! :)

We proudly welcomed Brantley Richard Smith into the world on March 8th, 2011. Here's how it happened...

I was on the "waiting list" to be called if the hospital had any room openings to be induced on Monday, March 7th. If not then, I was going to go in on the Wednesday, the 9th. Well, on Monday morning at 5am, I got a call from the hospital asking if we could be there at 6:30 because they had an opening! It was definitely not what I expected, but we were both really excited! So we got up, showered and prepared to go to the hospital. We got there right at 6:30am and got all checked in. Around 7am, we were taken to our room. My nurse came in and started my IV drip with pitocin to help jump start my contractions and get me to dilate more. She also hooked up the fetal monitors to keep track of Brantley's heart rate and my contractions. Monday was pretty much spent with me hooked up to the machines and laying in bed. My mom arrived mid-afternoon also. The doctor on call and my doctor checked on me a couple of times, but I was only dilated to 1 cm. So at 5pm the doctor on call decided to turn down the pitocin drip and let me eat and get some rest and they would start the process again on Tuesday morning. By this point I was starving (since I had not eaten since Sunday night) and I knew I wouldn't be able to eat until after he was born on Tuesday, so I sent Mike to Chili's for me and had Southwest Eggrolls and a chicken caesar pita! Very yummy! After I ate, we had some visitors. My cousin Rebecca and Rick and Terri came by. We visited with them for awhile and then my mom came back to our house for the night. Mike and I stayed at the hospital and tried to get as much rest as possible (which was not very easy!).

Before we left for the hospital...a family of two!

(And yes, the year is set wrong on my camera! Around 10am, the doctor came and checked me and I was dilated to about 3 cm, so they decided to break my water. After doing this, the contractions started coming more regularly and a lot stronger. My nurse went ahead and ordered the epidural for me which was put in around 11am. (That was no easy process! Very hard to sit still while having major contractions!! But the epidural was worth it in the end, because I didn't feel a thing!) The doctor came back in a little later and I was dilated to 5 cm, so I was making progress. However, I ended up being "stuck" at 5 cm for a couple of hours so another nurse came in and help to turn me from side to side every 15 minutes to get the baby to move down and for my cervix to dilate. (This nurse was not the nicest...just ask Mike..., but her process did work.) At about 6:30pm, I was at 10 cm!! Finally! :) My doctor came by the hospital and stayed throughout the delivery even though she wasn't on call (which was very nice of her!). Anyway, she told the nurses to help me start pushing, so we did. Mike helped to coach me and did an awesome job! (Funny story...the Clemson v. Carolina baseball game was on the tv that night, so in between pushes that's what Mike was watching! It was a nice distraction for me too though!) I pushed for about a hour and Brantley had moved down a little bit. The nurses said that she could see part of his head and that he had a lot of hair. However, he was not making a lot of progress moving down further so my doctor checked him and said that he was face up. She ordered for the epidural to be turned off so that I could really "feel" the pushes. I pushed for another 15-20 minutes (very painfully, I might add!) but still nothing. My doctor was very disappointed because she knew I really didn't want a C-section but she felt that was the best option because he seemed to be stuck on my pubic bone. At that point, I honestly was so exhausted that I didn't really care about the C-section; I was just ready to get it over with and meet my son! So, the nurses and my doctor began to prep the OR and everything needed for the C-section. I had to sign a consent form and they turned the epidural back on. I think this was the longest 30 minutes of my life!! Finally, around 9pm, I was taken back to the OR to begin. Mike was able to come in with me, while my mom, Rebecca, Rick, and Terri waited in the waiting room. My doctor and another one of her partners began the C-section as I exhaustedly laid on the table waiting to meet Brantley. At 9:32pm, they announced his birth and we got to see him before he was cleaned up. :) He weighed 8 lb, 3 oz and was 22 inches long! After he was all cleaned up, Mike went with him to the nursery as they finished with my surgery. He got to see him as he had all of his tests and was given his first bath. After the C-section, I had to wait in recovery for an hour, but my visitors were able to come back and see me. I finally got to go to a room around midnight to get some rest!

Mike is ready for surgery!

Hello Brantley!! :)

Once we were in our room, they brought Brantley to us and I finally got to hold my sweet baby boy! :) I nursed him and we got settled in for the night. He continues to build a layer of fat to help control his body temperature after birth, but it's likely he already measures about 20 inches and weighs a bit over 7 pounds, a mini watermelon. (Boys tend to be slightly heavier than girls.) The outer layers of his skin are sloughing off as new skin forms underneath. In other news: Brantley ended up arriving this week on March 8th. I will share his birth story in another post! :)~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-20979881472447011712011-03-06T15:32:00.003-05:002011-03-06T15:43:01.712-05:0038 weeks (February 26- March 4)How our baby's growing:
Your baby has really plumped up. He weighs about 6.8 pounds and he's over 19 1/2 inches long (like a leek). He has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold his hand for the first time! His organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb. Wondering what color your baby's eyes will be? You may not be able to tell right away. If he's born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If he's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time he's 9 months old. That's because a child's irises (the colored part of the eye) may gain more pigment in the months after he's born, but they usually won't get "lighter" or more blue. (Green, hazel, and brown eyes have more pigment than gray or blue eyes.)

In other news...
This week I didn't go to work and it was kinda nice to just be able to relax a little bit before things get very busy! I had two doctor's appointments this week- one on Tuesday and then again on Thursday. On Tuesday, I had another NST done. Everything was fine and normal, along with my blood pressure. My cervix had also started to dilate and was at 1 cm. She also mentioned being induced after 39 weeks (which is this coming week) due to his predicted size and not wanting me to develop preeclampsia . On Thursday, I had yet another NST and BP check. Everything was still good. So now we are just playing the waiting game. I go back to the doctor tomorrow (Monday) and hopefully we will have some news on when I will be induced!! Stay tuned!~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-15543355546281844022011-02-28T15:15:00.003-05:002011-02-28T15:47:00.031-05:0037 weeks (February 19-25)

How our baby's growing:
Your baby is now considered "full term," even though your due date is three weeks away. If you go into labor now, his lungs will likely be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb. (Some babies need a bit more time, though. So if you're planning to have a repeat c-section, for example, your practitioner will schedule it for no earlier than 39 weeks unless there's a medical reason to intervene earlier.) Your baby weighs 6 1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel (like a stalk of Swiss chard). Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. But don't be surprised if your baby's hair isn't the same color as yours. Dark-haired couples are sometimes thrown for a loop when their children come out as blonds or redheads, and fair-haired couples have been surprised by Elvis look-alikes. And then, of course, some babies sport only peach fuzz.

In other news...

I started my weekly doctor's appointments last week, so I went back again this week. My blood pressure was a little high on Tuesday so my doctor had me go to the hospital for some blood work and NST (nonstress test) to check on the baby. Everything was fine at the hospital and I was scheduled to go back to see my doctor on Thursday for another BP check, NST, and ultrasound. Well on Thursday, my BP was still high but Brantley was doing well on the NST and on the ultrasound. (Which is the great news!) His heartrate is normal, my fluid is at a good level, and he is healthy! She is guessing that he weighs about 7 lb 13 oz right now (which is a pretty big boy!) and she said that he has a big head and big feet! The big feet totally explain why my ribs hurt all of the time cause that's where he likes to keep them! :) My doc wanted me to complete a 24 urine test and return to the hospital on Saturday morning for another BP check and NST. She also suggested that I not return to work so that I could rest and keep my BP low. I went back to the hospital as planned on Saturday and all of the tests were still normal, but my BP is only low when laying down...which shows the need for moderate bedrest. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday and the nurse at the hospital said that she might mention induction at that time, so we'll see.

So, Friday was my last day at work. We did have a field trip that day, but it was a fun way to spend my last day with the kiddos. I told them that my doctor wanted me to stay home and rest before the baby is born and they seemed to be okay with that. They just want me to bring Brantley to visit them when he does arrive! I stayed a little longer after school to straighten up my classroom and get things are ready as possible for my substitute. I was mostly ready but there were still a few things that I had to take care of.

My mom also came into town on Friday to help me do some cleaning this weekend. It was a good thing that she did come because she was able to scrub and thoroughly clean because I couldn't do a whole lot! While she cleaned, I helped by straightening up and mostly finishing the nursery. Here are some pictures of Brantley's room.

~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-55535944332551430662011-02-28T14:59:00.002-05:002011-02-28T15:15:23.288-05:0036 weeks (February 12-18)

How our baby's growing:
Your baby is still packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. He now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. He's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected his skin during his nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of his first bowel movement. At the end of this week, your baby will be considered full-term. (Full-term is 37 to 42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 are post-term.) Most likely he's in a head-down position. But if he isn't, your practitioner may suggest scheduling an "external cephalic version," which is a fancy way of saying she'll try to coax your baby into a head-down position by manipulating him from the outside of your belly.

In other news...

Mike and I had our last baby shower on Tuesday. His fat layers — which will help regulate his body temperature once he's born — are filling him out, making him rounder. His skin is also smoother than ever. His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you've been nervous about preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.) These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as his brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-5950321816276883432011-01-16T16:42:00.002-05:002011-01-16T16:44:42.199-05:0032 weeks (January 15-21)How our baby's growing:
By now, your baby weighs 3.75 pounds (pick up a large jicama) and is about 16.7 inches long, taking up a lot of space in your uterus. You're gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to your baby. In fact, he'll gain a third to half of her birth weight during the next 7 weeks as he fattens up for survival outside the womb. He now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair (or at least respectable peach fuzz). His skin is becoming soft and smooth as he plumps up in preparation for birth.

I truly can't believe that I am already 32 weeks! That means only about 8 more weeks until meeting my little man! It has gone by incredibly fast!! :) I go back to the doctor on Tuesday for another checkup.~The Smiths~http://www.blogger.com/profile/03886634094068308702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1193976770139782868.post-76976375833803114022011-01-16T16:14:00.005-05:002011-01-16T16:48:30.577-05:0031 weeks (January 8-14)How our baby's growing:
This week, your baby measures over 16 inches long. He weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt. He can turn his head from side to side, and his arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as needed fat accumulates underneath his skin. He's probably moving a lot, too, so you may have trouble sleeping because your baby's kicks and somersaults keep you up. Take comfort: All this moving is a sign that your baby is active and healthy.

In other news:
I had my first two baby showers on January 8th in Edgefield.
